又称“搅拌式”、“搅拌柱式”又或“搅拌棒式”，为历史最久的一种电动洗衣机，多为全自动机，可再分为附有干衣机、和没有干衣机的。所有近代的美式洗衣机都已经有自动脱水功能，不需要另外逐件衣物放到像两支碾面粉的棒子叠在一起的电动脱水器，把衣服碾干，另外，洗衣棒还可分为“单节式”和“双节式”，洗衣效果各有不同，但双节式的型号价钱通常比较高。
